Broward On Broadway to Present FIDDLER, GUYS & DOLLS et al. in '10-11

Broward On Broadway has announced their upcoming 2010-2011 Season.

Beginning in the fall of 2010 Broward on Broadway will Present FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.

A perennial hit since it first opened in 1964, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF has captured the hearts of people all over the world with its poignant story of the enduring bonds of the family. When FIDDLER ON THE ROOF opened in the United States in 1964, it was a time of change and crumbling traditions in this country. Perhaps the explanation for its ultimate and enduring success was that the musical illustrated the universality of such issues as the "generation gap," youthful dissent, revolutionary doctrine, and the oppression of minorities. As Tevye wrestles with the defiance of his daughters, the modern customs of a younger generation, and the loss of his treasured home and village, he comes to realize that it is through these struggles and the strength of family that new traditions are born and carried forward.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF features music by Jerry Block, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and a book by Joseph Stein. Set in Tsarist Russia in 1905. It is based on Tevye and his Daughters (or Tevye the Milkman) and other tales by Sholem Aleichem. The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope with both the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters-each one's choice of husband moves further away from the customs of her faith-and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.

In the winter of 2011 Broward on Broadway will present CABARET.

CABARET is based on John Van Druten's 1951 play I Am a Camera, which in turn was adapted from the novel Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood. Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, it focuses on nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub and revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with young American writer Cliff Bradshaw. A sub-plot involves the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub which serves as a constant metaphor for the tenuous and threatening state of late Weimar Germany throughout the show.

The final show of the season GUYS AND DOLLS will be presented in the Spring of 2011.

GUYS AND DOLLS is packed with such classic hits as "Fugue for Tinhorns," "A Bushel and a Peck," "Adelaide's Lament," "I'll Know," "Guys and Dolls," "More I Cannot Wish You," "Luck Be A Lady," and "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat," Guys and Dolls features music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows.

Based on "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown" and "Blood Pressure," two short stories by Damon Runyon, it also borrows characters and plot elements from other Runyon stories, most notably "Pick the Winner."
