Maltz Jupiter Theatre Presents BYE BYE BIRDIE, 6/29 & 30

Maltz-Jupiter-Theatre-Presents-BYE-BYE-BIRDIE-20010101

Veteran Broadway performer Deanna L. Dys will direct and choreograph the upcoming production of the family-friendly musical Bye Bye Birdie on June 29 and 30 at 7:30 p.m.

The show will star students from the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Paul and Sandra Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts’ three-week Senior Conservatory summer camp (grades 6-12), in which students learn all aspects of stage production, culminating in full performances of a show.

One of the most captivating musical shows of our time, Bye Bye Birdie is a musical satire on American society that tells the story of a rock and roll singer who is about to be inducted into the army. Featuring such favorites as “A Lot of Livin’ to Do” and “Put on a Happy Face,” the show is reminiscent of Elvis Presley’s draft into the military – and “tops” in imagination and merriment.

“Bye Bye Birdie is a classic snapshot of music and style of the 1950s,” said Julie Rowe, director of education for the Conservatory. “The music is a blast, the storyline follows a rock and roll star, and a lot of the musical’s characters are teenagers themselves. Bye Bye Birdie is fun for everyone!”

Dys, who is currently choreographing the award-winning hit HBO series Boardwalk Empire, was the youngest performer (at 16 years old) ever hired by legendary Broadway producer David Merrick to appear in his Tony Award®-winning musical 42nd Street. She appeared in the leading role of Dolly Tate opposite Reba McEntire on Broadway in Annie Get Your Gun, as well as Nickie Pignatelli opposite Donna McKechnie in Sweet Charity. She appeared opposite Deborah Gibson in Chicago, as well as having been a featured dancer and/or assistant choreographer on Broadway in LoveMusik, Crazy For You, Candide, Meet Me in St. Louis, Saturday Night Fever and more.

A series of commercials that Dys choreographed for the Boston Red Sox received a 2004 Emmy Award, and her choreographic stage credits include Aida, Annie, 42nd Street, The Full Monty, State Fair, Crazy For You, Jesus Christ Superstar and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

During camp, Dys will guide students through the process of auditioning for a Broadway show, a fast-paced rehearsal schedule and the opportunity to showcase all that they’ve learned onstage, complete with costumes, sets, professional lighting and a professional theater orchestra.

“The Senior Conservatory is a great opportunity for local teens to have the chance to experience what it's like to work in professional theatre and perform on that Theatre’s stage in a full musical,” Rowe said, who will direct the Junior Conservatory’s production of Willy Wonka, Jr. in July.
Other exciting camp options for grades K-12 include the upcoming Junior Conservatory (grades 3-5), a one-week comedy camp and a two-week dance intensive camp.

Students will perform Bye Bye Birdie June 29 and 30 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults; $15 for children.

To purchase tickets, call the box office at (561) 575-2223. For more information or to sign up for the Junior Conservatory and other camps, call 561-575-2672 or visit www.jupitertheatre.org for a complete camp schedule.
